OUR BLueprint for a
Distinctly Christian
Education
We begin with the end in mind: a new path forward.
Bringing “School” Back to School
The word “school” comes from the Greek scholé which originally meant “leisure.” It did not mean classrooms, homework, or academic performance.
The word scholé (leisure) did not mean idleness. It meant being free from distraction and busyness in order to pursue what matters most: truth, wisdom, and, ultimately, our formation.
In other words, learning. By contrast, the word ascholia—the opposite of scholé—meant “work.”
Scholé / Ascholia
This distinction is not merely linguistic; it reflects an entire philosophy of education. To the ancients, scholé was about purposeful and reflective leisure that sought truth, wisdom, and the formation of one’s heart and mind. Work had value—it put food on the table, for example.
But ascholia was primarily a means to make space for something greater, or better: learning, contemplation, and the pursuit of what we call Christian character or spiritual formation.
Scholé / Ascholia
The meaning of “school” has shifted
Over time, the meaning of “school” shifted. School no longer described freedom from labor in order to pursue learning, but a place where learning happened.
And, in our modern context, that shift has deepened even further. School has become synonymous with buildings, athletic fields, and academic pressure, instead of the pleasure of learning itself.
What was once scholē (leisure inclined toward truth) has now become, for so many students, a form of ascholia (work) and a cycle of constant activity and fragmented attention. In other words, school has now become work!
A new path forward…
We believe this inversion has profound implications—academically, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. If students are constantly busy, but rarely reflective and contemplative, they may achieve outcomes without being truly formed.
This foundational understanding is behind the new direction we are embarking on for our secondary (grades 7–12) program.
A new path forward…
Our Blueprint for a Distinctly Christian Education
a love for learning, a love for christ
Coastal Christian School exists to provide an education rooted in God’s purpose for human flourishing. We aim to cultivate two lifelong passions in our students: a love for learning, and a love for Christ.
Our mission is to partner with parents in preparing students to serve God in all of life, providing excellence in the spiritual, academic, social, and physical aspects of education.
Equipping every student
We endeavor to provide an education that is guided by understanding God’s purpose and desire for human flourishing. We believe Christian education done right fosters dual passions: a lifelong love for learning, and the desire to live a Christ-centered life.
Our aim is to equip every student with the love and desire to serve God with all of his or her mind, heart, soul, and strength.
We are not a refuge from the world, but a training ground for it.
Our approach centers on three commitments…
1) Intellectual preparation
We believe in equipping students to actively engage their world and influence their culture through academic excellence. The work at Coastal Christian is challenging for a purpose. We seek to develop students who have resilience, sharp minds, and a clear calling and purpose for serving God and His Kingdom all the days of their lives.
Our graduates matriculate to competitive colleges and universities prepared to thrive, equipped to live purpose-driven lives with wisdom and discernment.
2) Spiritual formation
CCS is not just a college-preparatory school. We seek to be a “life-preparatory” school, raising the bar on both academic excellence and spiritual passion so as to graduate students who will positively influence the world. We begin with the end in mind.
We measure success not only by what students know, but by who they become. We think excellent grades and test scores are important because they reflect our students’ effort and work ethic, not just their innate aptitude.
But we also seek to foster academic and life skills—what we call the “habits of the mind”—that will help them live purposeful and productive lives that glorify God and contribute to the good of their community.
Our goal is to equip our students spiritually and academically to become active followers of Jesus, capable of making a real difference in the lives of those around them.
3) strategic influence
The education of many godly leaders and great Christian apologists of the past was based on a curriculum grounded in a commitment to understanding the world, and reality from a biblical perspective. Many schools today have deviated from these standards, and too few students are being challenged to press toward a vision and goal that is larger than themselves.
Our desire is to challenge and encourage our students to answer God’s call upon their lives.
We train our students to invest their unique gifts, talents, passions, and opportunities to glorify God and further His Kingdom by engaging and serving their communities.
Our school is ultimately about changing lives to make a strategic difference. We are more than a school. We seek to be the training ground for young disciples of Jesus who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in their generation, for the sake of the gospel, and in gratitude for the cross of Christ.
"Beginning with the end in mind" means having a clear idea of the desired outcomes in our students.
The portrait of our ideal graduate
The portrait of our ideal graduate reflects an individual with evident, enduring habits of the mind and heart—one who thinks deeply, loves well, and lives purposefully for God’s glory. Our desire is to help our students graduate as:
- Thoughtful & Discerning Thinkers
- Creative & Compelling Communicators
- Relational & Compassionate Contributors
- Resilient & Responsible Individuals
- Christ-centered & Purpose-driven Leaders

Hybrid Block Schedule
Our “Hybrid Block Schedule” is a strategic framework for cultivating the kind of graduates we seek to equip and launch.
By providing extended, focused learning periods, this model will foster thoughtful and discerning thinkers who can engage critically with important ideas. It will establish space for the development of creative and compelling communicators through extensive discussion, collaboration, and presentations while also encouraging students to grow in their relationships with others.
The rhythm of the schedule is designed to promote resilience, responsibility, and wise stewardship of time. This ultimately supports the development of Christ-centered, purpose-driven leaders prepared to impact their communities.
